Meet your new 2009 -2010 Calgary Ski Club Council
 |
Alasdair Fergusson - President
Also known as the "Tsar of XC skiing", there isn't anything as President that I haven’t done at the CSC! In my 38 years at the CSC I’ve held various positions, set up the Learn to Loppet lessons, done tracksetting and grooming at Shaganappi, volunteered as chief coordinator at the Lake Louise Loppet for over 10 years, and volunteer and chief coordinator for the New and Used Ski Sale for over 20 years. Whew! Add to that being the CSC advocate for the National Parks, City of Calgary and other Ski organizations. A retired former Geologist, I hope to be around to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the club in 2020 and to continue to see CSC, the Loppet and the Ski Sale prosper. Most importantly I want to continue to be able to enjoy skiing and hiking with my wife Helen and my fellow companions in my beloved mountains.

Brian Danco - Vice-President
After a forced absence from skiing while in Houston, I returned to Calgary and joined the CSC in 2008. I joined council as Vice-President to bring new ideas and help improve CSC for all members . This year I hope to improve the dialogue between council and members, assist other council volunteers in their goals and activities and promote to our members great activities and opportunities with CSC. And being a Downhill skier, the most important goal is to have fun this ski year!

Diane Duckett - Office Administrator
I’m British and came to Calgary from Syria in 1997. I have 2 children, and have travelled to, and worked in administrative roles in many countries and owned a restaurant in the UK. Currently I operate a small real-estate portfolio of fully-furnished condominiums. I joined the CSC last season, love downhill skiing and am a Level I instructor, planning to take my Level 2 course this winter. I’ve has just discovered hiking and will pursue Nordic skiing next year. I’ve also had a private pilot's licence in the 80s, have parachuted and bungie-jumped and enjoy life to the fullest!

Gillian Savage-Knight - Secretary
This is my fourth year on council and I will be once again taking on the role of Secretary. Prior to this role I was the membership director. Both positions have been rewarding and I look forward to an exciting year with many new council members. The big focus this year will be improving our existing programs and encouraging members to take part in all aspects of the club.I joined the club in 2004 to be an assistant coach with the Nordic ski program. I continue to coach each year and love helping people learn and improve their skiing abilities. It is so satisfying watching someone learn a new skill or technique. I’ve also enjoyed being able to upgrade my skills as an instructor and coach by taking courses. In the off-season I enjoy running, mountain biking and hiking. Anything to keep me in the mountains!

Lynda Gilchrist - Treasurer
I’m a new member of the CSC and proud to put my accounting and small business skills to work volunteering for the club. I’m a returnee to downhill skiing after a 20 year break, and I've found the downhill skiers to be very supportive in getting me up to speed again. I have been learning to Nordic ski over the past 5 years and look forward to continuing that with the club. I have enjoyed hiking in the Rockies and recently cycled my first road trip with CSC, which was a 70 Km ride!!

Glenna Paton - Public Relations Director
I’m a downhill skier who has just recently reformed from a few years on the dark side of snowboarding . I learned to ski on the icy slopes of Southern Ontario and honed my skills during a two year stint living in Switzerland. My hubby Andy and I moved to Calgary just over a year ago and we’re both looking forward to our second ski season with CSC. I hope my fast talking and natural exuberance will serve me well in promoting CSC and all of the great activities our club has to offer. You’ll be hearing from me with our CSC UPDATES newsletter! which I create and seeing a lot of me at all of our upcoming social events!

Craig Danco - Membership Director
I joined CSC in 2008 as one of the crazy keener downhill skiers and liked it so much I became the Membership Director this year! Skiing since I was six, you’ll see me out in any kind of weather and I never miss a weekend trip ! I’m working this year to get the best deals, discounts and promotions for our members and to keep spreading the word about the CSC. If you don’t find me out on the hills almost every weekend, you’ll find me mountain biking them instead!

Mark Kudryk - I.T. Director
After 3 years as the club’s Nordic Director, I’ve moved on to a new role on council as this year’s IT Director. My main focus will be to overhaul the club’s website to make it more user friendly and supportive of the club’s activities. I’ve been a member of the club for the last 5 years, participating in Nordic events and organizing WinterStart for the last 4 years and this year. This year, I’m looking forward to participating in more Alberta and BC Loppets and attending the Olympics in Whistler!

Cindy Tester - Nordic Co-Director
I’ve been a member of CSC for 8 years. Besides a Cross Country skier, I am also a down hill skier and a club Cross Country Ski Coach. I find it fun and rewarding to help members improve their classic and skating techniques and enjoyment of the sport. I race a few Loppets and the Canadian Birkebeiner each year and will be planning and managing our Nordic Ski Program, with a focus on Adult programs such as Winter Start Ski Weekend, and Learn to Ski Programs. I am also excited to help introduce our new Learn-to-Loppet program for this upcoming season. The 2010 Olympics are in our back yard and what a wonderful time to celebrate the sport and get out and stay fit with the CSC. We’re excited to build on our xc ski program, increase our membership of new and returning members, and promote fun on skis this season.

Flora Giesbrecht - Nordic Co-Director
I’m passionate about sliding on the snow, in particular cross-country skiing, whether it be in or out of tracks. I have been a member of the CSC since 1999 in various roles - the most recently as Head Jackrabbits Coach and this year sharing the Nordic directors position with Cindy Tester. I really look forward to skiing a lot this year, whether with the family or an adult training group, and skiing a bit more in the vertical fashion with our Alpine CSC friends. We have a lot of exciting new ideas to bring to the CSC this upcoming season and encourage any new ideas and help along the way.

Debra Mandzuik-Burns - Downhill Director
Born and raised in Saskatchewan, I was briefly introduced to skiing by a friend in High School, but my love for skiing really developed when I moved to Lethbridge and started skiing at Fernie. I have been a member of the CSC since January 2007. I joined CSC to meet people who shared my passion for downhill skiing. Through day trips and weekend bus trips, I have enjoyed skiing in a friendly atmosphere with other members and developing great friendships. Since planning events is second nature for me, last year I immediately volunteered to plan and act as trip coordinator for the successful Kimberley trip. This year, I volunteered to be the Downhill Director in order to plan a variety of extended bus trips, day trips and carpool trips that hopefully will offer something for every discipline offered by the CSC. My plan for this year is to join our Alpine/Cross-Country/Snowshoe and Hiking programs through camaraderie on trips and social activities.

Lynn Bowers - Hiking/Snowshoeing Director
I am the Hiking and Snowshoe Director and have been with the CSC for over 20 years and have been an honourary member for a few years now. I’m known for wanting to combine fine dining with all my outings, whether dressed appropriately for the restaurants or not. Come out and join me on the hills this year!
